World Bank announces electricity campaign

By Ritah Kemigisa. The World Bank has announced that it is soon embarking on a bigger campaign to extend electricity to rural areas across Africa. This was revealed last evening by the banks senior economist Richard Walker during a video teleconferencing briefing from Washington DC with journalists. In the bank’s latest Economic Update report released yesterday, access to reliable and affordable energy sources is highlighted as one of the major challenges faced by African countries. The report further revealsthat two out of three people in Africa do not have reliable and affordable electricity to produce and be competitive on the global market. Uganda’s commonwealth team returns today

By Ritah Kemigisa. The team that represented Uganda at the 2018 Gold Coast common wealth games in Australia returns today. The Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni is expected to receive this team at Entebbe International Airport. According to officials, the first batch will arrive at 1:50 PM aboard an emirates flight while the second which will be carrying the Golden Boy Joshua Cheptegei will arrive at around 2:30PM. However it has been revealed that two of the athletes; Irene Kasubo and KalidiBatuusa who were part of the 69 man team will not be part of this team travelling back home as they allegedly vanished. Man Hangs himself after hacking wife to death

A 35-year old man has hang himself inside his house after allegedly hacking his wife to death. The body of Badru Malinzi a resident of Nasuti village in Iganga district was found hanging near that of his wife that was lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts on the head. The Busoga East Police spokesperson James Mubi says residents reported the tragedy to police after realizing that the house had not been opened as usual. Mubi says the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Iganga-Nakavule hospital mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue. MUK denies sex scandal

By Ivan Ssenabulya. Makerere University has denied reports that one of its students has been sexually assaulted by a staff member. The university spokesperson Rita Namisango says the young woman whose picture has been circulated on social media showing her and a man in a compromising position is not a student but rather an alumnus. Edward Kisuze, the man said to be in the photo was yesterday suspended by the university over sexual harassment allegations. The senior administration assistant in the office of the Academic Registrar is being investigated by police over sexual harassment. Namisango however calls for calm as investigation into the matter continue.

Sheikh Kamoga Bail hearing Fails

By Ruth Anderah. Hearing of a bail application filed by the jailed Tabliq leader Sheikh Yunus Kamoga has been adjourned to May 2nd 2018. This was after the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ Lillian Omara informed the Court of Appeal Justice Christopher Madrama that her office was only served with application on Friday last week and got instructions on Monday this week. She has thus asked for an adjournment to enable her respond to the said application. While adjourning the case, the judge has ordered Sheikh Kamoga’s advocates led by Friday Kagoro to avail prosecution with all documents in relation to the would-be sureties. Kamoga is seeking to be released on bail pending the hearing and final disposal of his appeal challenging the life time imprisonment term …
