Truck drivers demonstrate over weigh bridge fees

Truck drivers who ferry sand from Lweera have again gone on rampage closing Kampala-Masaka road.
The group is said to have blocked the road at Buwama with over 100 heavy trucks packed in the middle of the road in protest of what they call exorbitant fees charged by the Uganda National Roads Authority.
The authority charges between Shs.50,000 and Shs.80,000 at the Buwama weigh bridge.
This is the second such protest in just one week.
However speaking to KFM, the authority spokesperson Dan Alinange says they will not be intimidated by such strikes.

“We are not intimidated we do not eat sand from Masaka. Our role is to protect the country’s roads and all they have to do is comply with the requirements of the law,” said Mr Alinange in telephone interview.
