Tobacco farmers petition parliament

A group of tobacco farmers across the country under the Uganda tobacco growers association has today petitioned the speaker of parliament over the proposed tobacco control bill.

In the petition handed over to the chairperson of the Greater North parliamentary Forum Dr Sam Okwonzi, the farmers asked that the bill is not passed in its current form.

The spokesperson of the association Candia Morris said the growers are not opposed to the entire bill but some few sections that seek to suffocate the operations of the players in the tobacco industry

They argue that if operations of these companies are stopped, the incomes and livelihoods of millions of tobacco farmers who depend on this crop would be affected.

The forum chairperson Okwonzi has promised to help redraft the petition before formally presenting it before parliament
