Museveni Warns Zambia’s Opposition Against Chaos

President Yoweri Museveni has urged Zambia’s opposition leaders to stop trouble and contribute towards the development of the country. The President was speaking to the local media in Lusaka, before he was hosted by his Zambian counterpart Edgar Chagwa Lungu to a state dinner. Museveni who is in Zambia for the country’s 52nd independence anniversary celebrations saluted former President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda for spearheading the struggle to fight for the liberation and independence of the Africa alongside other past leaders in Tanzania, South Africa and Mozambique. “I congratulate President Edgar Lungu for winning the election. Abim youth arrested over Youth Funds

Atleast 9 youth in Abim district have been arrested over diverting Youth Livelihood funds to payment of dowry. The youth including district councilors were arrested in an operation commanded by the Resident District Commissioner Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka. Hashaka says the operation is aimed at helping the district recover money that the youth borrowed but they have since failed to pay back. Nelson Olwit the Assistant Chief Administrative Officer says the district had conducted a series of meetings with the youth to see how to recover the money in vain. He adds that out of shs 552 million that was disbursed to 49 youth groups in the financial years of 2013-2014 and 2015 nothing has been recovered.

More teenage pregnancies reported in Budaka

Education authorities are worried about the increasing rate of teenage pregnancies in Budaka district. This is after 17 pupils at Nasanga Primary school, Nasanga sub-county in Budaka District were found to be pregnant in a period of just one month. Presenting the Education sector report from assessment and monitoring in various schools, Sam Nayepe, a Councilor representing Mugiti sub-county has blamed on parents for not doing enough to protect their children. Sowali Kamulya, the Bukedi police spokesperson says 2 to 3 cases of defilement are reported daily in Budaka but the complainants quickly disappear as the parties secretly opt for negotiation and eventually the victims are forcefully married off. MP’s against elimination of age limits for presidential candidates.

Majority members of the 10th of parliament are strongly against the elimination of age limits for presidential candidates. This is according to new report that has just been released this morning by the citizen’s coalition for electoral democracy in Uganda. According to the report, 73% of the 324 interviewed MPs agree that there is no need to tamper with age limits, while only 27% see merit in lifting age limits for presidential candidates. The report further reveals that  among NRM members, 65% do not support the move, while 35% support it, in the opposition camp, 97% are totally against the move but 3% support it , while among independents 81% are against the move and only 19% support it. Rebecca Kadaga elected IPU president

Ugandan Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has been elected unopposed President of the African Geopolitical Group at the Inter Parliamentary Union. Kadaga’s election was during the meeting of the African Geopolitical Group at the ongoing 135th IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. Speakers from Ethiopia and Madagascar withdrew their candidature in favour of Ms Kadaga whom they described as a woman of “good stature and defender of women and human rights.” By this position, Ms Kadaga will be leading all African parliaments that are members of the IPU.  She will, on behalf of IPU, coordinate pertinent governance and emergency matters on the African continent.
